This episode is very special to me. It’s not often I get to converse with a innovator, a pioneer or a living legend in anything let alone graffiti culture. Today’s guest on the show is TAKI 183.
Before recording a single episode of this podcast I made list of people I would love to have on the show. I threw Taki’s name on there under the dream big column. I wrote it not ever thinking it was a real possibility but here we are lol. That write it down and manifest it stuff I’ve always heard about does have a lot of merit to it, so I’m learning.
TAKI 183 was gracious enough to give me a few hours of his time to talk in-depth about his creative journey at the Auto Body Shop he owns out Yonkers. That being said, it was toward the end of the work day so we had to stop and start depending on if someone in the garage or a client needed to pull him away for a second.
I put a sound effect in between clips to give you an idea of when I had to stop the tape.
This episode was recorded in the waiting area of the garage… So just like when I’m deep in the city, it has it’s own sounds; like refrigerator humming, beeps, doors slamming, car lifts, wheels getting changed, sirens and of course, a healthy amount of welcomed disturbances from folks in the neighborhood.
I could totally edit this stuff out but to me, its all apart of the New York Said audio experience.
Enough with the intro, please enjoy.

Today’s guest on the show is DJ Neil Armstrong. I’ve been listening to Neil’s mixes for well over 10 years now and I can honestly say I was pretty hype when he accepted my invite to appear on the show.
In this episode we have a super in-depth conversation about paying dues, how to sustain longevity in the entertainment business, his dog Poh, universal languages, his various experiences as a tour DJ for Jay Z, Neil’s Dinner & A Mixtape series plus much much more.
Just a heads up, we recorded this in a pretty quiet room. And a bunch of little kids showed up with their moms and all of a sudden it got live. It got loud, but Neil and I never stopped. We were knee deep into the conversation and at that point it didn’t make sense to move.
You can still hear us really clearly but the party in the background does get a bit distracting at times, I apologize in advance.
With that said, please enjoy.
Today’s guest on the show is Drummer, Showtime Hood. As I was transferring to the F train at West 4th I heard the familiar sound of Showtime's drums. I stopped, listened and invited him to the show. He was happy to play a set but when I asked for an interview, Showtime thought it would be best to let his music do the talking.
Today’s guest on the show is Singer-Songwriter, TV-Host and former Cirque du Soleil Acro-Singer, Meetu Chilana. In this episode we talk about In this episode we talk about dissecting animals, Cirque du Soleil, Tisch School of the Arts and Meetu sings us a song about Black Coffee.

Last week I found myself exploring several districts in Paris looking for street art and good eats. As I challenge to get a different flavor of the city I decided to skip the cabs and walk or take the metro to everywhere I wanted to go. In doing that I covered a lot of ground fairly quick.
One day as I was transferring from train to train and I walked by Marvin Parks in one of the tunnels. He was holding what looked like a record cover of himself and I just walked over to ask if he was a singer and he said yes. I asked if he’d be down to share his story for podcast and he said yes.
So that being said, Marvin and I are standing in the middle of a busy passageway in the metro or the subway during rush hour. It’s pretty noisy down there but we got it done.
In this episode we talk about why Marvin moved to Paris, the key to surviving in the city, busking in the metro, Natalie Cole, reaching people with what you have and much much more.
Please enjoy.

Today’s episode a little different. This week I was in London walking their alleyways looking for street art and good eats. At some point I found myself doing the super touristy stuff, like checking out Big Ben and walking the busy South Bank Riverside Walkway.
On my my way to London Bridge I stumbled up gallery@oxo and was fascinated, better yet moved by Solo exhibition by artist Luke Norton, it was called ‘I haven’t been feeling myself lately’
I was so moved by the work that I inquired about the artist. Turns out Luke was in the spot and after a 5 minute conversation, I invited him to be on the show. He was up for it and here we are.
In this episode we talking about growing up in South London, his current exhibition, words, ideas, phrases and much much more.

This is episode is a little different. A few weeks ago I was asked by my good friends Natacha and Gary to do an engagement photography shoot. Thats not really my thing but I told them I’d be up to have a Sunday fun day in Brooklyn and I’d bring my camera to capture the fun.
So on the first day of 2017, we all met in DUMBO and I captured their day.
Now, a few years ago I had this grand idea to interview a newly wed couple and asked them how they met, their first date, blah blah blah… For some odd reason that idea never happened.
On the morning of my shoot with Natacha and Gary this little voice was like “Bring the mic, do that idea thing with the couples and stuff” and so I did.
After the shoot I asked if they’d be down to help make my idea tangible and of course they were. I really do have great and supportive friends.
They had a car, So I told Gary to take a walk and I interviewed Natacha in the back seat of their VW Jetta. And then Gary came back, then I asked Natacha to kick rocks and got Gary’s side of the story.
I really just wanted to do this interview in private and give it to them. I had no intention of making these conversations public let alone a podcast episode but as I listened to their stories, I felt compelled to share them with you.
I got their permission aaaaaaaaand here we are.
Please, enjoy.

Happy New Year good people, welcome to the New York Said podcast. It’s a very rainy Tuesday in the Lower East Side but I’m feeling it. I love the sunshine because I appreciate the rain.
This episode is a little different. A few days ago I invited Juan back on the show to talk about his favorite podcast, music and books but we ended up talking about that and everything under the sun.
What you’re about to hear is take two. In the first take we started off great and then somehow we ended up in the super dark political place. It didn’t even make sense to publish it, I just made a new clip as we were talking and started from there.
Please enjoy.

Today’s guest on the show is Iva Kravitz.
Not too long ago Iva and I were working together on a Landscape Architecture project in Philly. And once filming on that project wrapped we headed to Amtrak and caught a train back to New York. While we were sitting there I asked Iva if she's be down to be a guest on the show. Even though we were clearly exhausted she was still up to kick it. Thanks again Iva.
So that being said... we are on a train, there is a lot of background noise, horns and from time you'll hear the train conductor make a few announcements. And thats all good because that's what taking this show on the road is all about.
In this episode we talk about the design community, Marketing, PR, Advertising, growing up in a Norman Rockwell painting of a town, Park Slope eats, cautious optimism and much much more.
Please enjoy.

Today’s guest on the show is documentary photographer Jamel Shabazz.
Jamel’s contributions to documentary photography are applauded the all over the world and in my humble opinion Brother Shabazz the is the Gordon Parks of my generation. I marveled at his work way before I knew his name. You have no idea how happy it made me feel to sit at a chess table in the middle of Brooklyn and kick it with some who has and still inspires me to do my best with my skill set every single day.
We met up in Dr. Ronald McNair Park across from the Brooklyn Museum to talk about growing up in Brooklyn, self publishing vs traditional publishing, his experience in the military, the summer of 1980, striving to capture images that say something profound, the importance of empathy, the crack era, giving back to the community and much much more.
As you are listening to this conversation, I highly recommend you pull up Jamel’s Instagram, website or flip through one of his many photography books as you listen. It will be a great reference to what we are talking about. I’ve provided links to it all at NewYorkSaid.com
Side note, we are in the middle of Brooklyn. So, there will be sirens, there will be interruptions and that’s what you get when you record outside in New York, it tends to want to be present right there with you.
That’s enough intro for one show, please enjoy.

One of my favorite things to do is walk around New York just checking street art from block to block. On my walks I’ll catch the latest murals, graffiti, stickers and wheat paste art. If you don’t know what wheat paste art is, wheat paste is a gel or liquid adhesive made from wheat flour or starch and water. That glue thats usually made in a big bucket is then used for paper artwork and then pasted on smooth walls. You’ve probably seen it and ya don’t even know it. Think Shepherd Ferry and his project Obey Giant, then theres Adam Cost, or Swoon, theres Bunny M, uhh there is also JR of the Inside Out Project.
Today’s guest is Libby but most people probably know her from her street art, Phoebe New York. Phoebe can be found in the form stickers and wheatepaste art throughout the streets of New York.
I met up with Libby in Washington Square Park and she walked me through the good, the bad and the ugly of being a street artist. In this episode we talk about shooting film photography in Paris, her love of vintage book covers, writing, becoming an artist, her first solo show, transitioning into a street artist, putting up stickers, her first night of wheat pasting, getting arrested, meeting the New York City Vandal Squad, how her alter ego Phoebe was born, subliminal messaging, letting go of crutches and much much more.
Before you begin this episode or while you’re listening to this episode you should visit Phoebe instagram at phoebenewyork just to get an idea of what her work looks like and have a reference to what we are talking about as we make our way through her journey as an artist.
Of course you can find links to her IG and everything we talking about in this episode at below.
Don’t forget to subscribe, rate and leave a comment in the iTunes store aaaaand that’s enough intro for one show, please enjoy.

Today’s guest on the show is DJ CherishTheLuv also known as Cynthia. I met Cynthia back in the Spring and within a few minutes, I knew I wanted to invite her to be a guest on the show. Fast forward to a few days ago, our schedules aligned and we finally had a chance to meet in the East Village. I don’t want to give it away but here is some of what we talked about, growing up in the East Village, creating attractive design, the growth mentality, listening to your intuition, public speaking, talking to her phoenix, getting her doctorate in survival, meeting Oprah and declarations under good circumstances.
