Today’s guest on the show is documentary photographer Jamel Shabazz.
Jamel’s contributions to documentary photography are applauded the all over the world and in my humble opinion Brother Shabazz the is the Gordon Parks of my generation. I marveled at his work way before I knew his name. You have no idea how happy it made me feel to sit at a chess table in the middle of Brooklyn and kick it with some who has and still inspires me to do my best with my skill set every single day.
We met up in Dr. Ronald McNair Park across from the Brooklyn Museum to talk about growing up in Brooklyn, self publishing vs traditional publishing, his experience in the military, the summer of 1980, striving to capture images that say something profound, the importance of empathy, the crack era, giving back to the community and much much more.
As you are listening to this conversation, I highly recommend you pull up Jamel’s Instagram, website or flip through one of his many photography books as you listen. It will be a great reference to what we are talking about. I’ve provided links to it all at NewYorkSaid.com
Side note, we are in the middle of Brooklyn. So, there will be sirens, there will be interruptions and that’s what you get when you record outside in New York, it tends to want to be present right there with you.
That’s enough intro for one show, please enjoy.

One of my favorite things to do is walk around New York just checking street art from block to block. On my walks I’ll catch the latest murals, graffiti, stickers and wheat paste art. If you don’t know what wheat paste art is, wheat paste is a gel or liquid adhesive made from wheat flour or starch and water. That glue thats usually made in a big bucket is then used for paper artwork and then pasted on smooth walls. You’ve probably seen it and ya don’t even know it. Think Shepherd Ferry and his project Obey Giant, then theres Adam Cost, or Swoon, theres Bunny M, uhh there is also JR of the Inside Out Project.
Today’s guest is Libby but most people probably know her from her street art, Phoebe New York. Phoebe can be found in the form stickers and wheatepaste art throughout the streets of New York.
I met up with Libby in Washington Square Park and she walked me through the good, the bad and the ugly of being a street artist. In this episode we talk about shooting film photography in Paris, her love of vintage book covers, writing, becoming an artist, her first solo show, transitioning into a street artist, putting up stickers, her first night of wheat pasting, getting arrested, meeting the New York City Vandal Squad, how her alter ego Phoebe was born, subliminal messaging, letting go of crutches and much much more.
Before you begin this episode or while you’re listening to this episode you should visit Phoebe instagram at phoebenewyork just to get an idea of what her work looks like and have a reference to what we are talking about as we make our way through her journey as an artist.
Of course you can find links to her IG and everything we talking about in this episode at below.
Don’t forget to subscribe, rate and leave a comment in the iTunes store aaaaand that’s enough intro for one show, please enjoy.

Today’s guest on the show is DJ CherishTheLuv also known as Cynthia. I met Cynthia back in the Spring and within a few minutes, I knew I wanted to invite her to be a guest on the show. Fast forward to a few days ago, our schedules aligned and we finally had a chance to meet in the East Village. I don’t want to give it away but here is some of what we talked about, growing up in the East Village, creating attractive design, the growth mentality, listening to your intuition, public speaking, talking to her phoenix, getting her doctorate in survival, meeting Oprah and declarations under good circumstances.

Amon Focus, in another iteration of New York Said, had the opportunity to speak with TMNK at the 2013 SCOPE event and he happened upon a very inspiring man whose message was this “Inside everybody anybody and especially you is a gift that God put that there is something that you can do that no one else can do there is a contribution that you can make to this world but you got to believe in yourself and you got to work at it every day, relentlessly. It will be difficult. But I want people to see if a nobody like me can come to the streets of New York and several years later, not ten years later within 5 years has his work exhibited around the world and to be up here in SCOPE that anybody can, anybody can make a difference, everybody can make a difference.” –TMNK
The contemporary artist’s message is truly inspiring and uplifting, he used his art and his voice to encourage those around him to master their gifts and honor the ideas of being your brothers & sisters keepers. He would not allow himself to be defined by the ignorance of others and left a legacy that stained the mind and soul of those who were lucky enough to experience his art and his message that art is a weapon. There were 3 jewels in all of his work dedicated to his 3 children. This interview is dedicated to them and his family so that they may hear and honor the legacy that was built for them by this incredible man. May he rest in power.
