Today’s guest on the show is Diego.

The other day I was walking to Washington Square Park looking to meet some content creators but they weren’t there. There was schedule mix up because Instagram’s algorithm gave me an old post and I thought the meet up was that day, I was wrong.

On my walk back home I ended on Houston Street. As I was walking, I walked past Diego is sitting on the corner. He had a sign that read he was homeless as well as a change cup by his feet.

As I turned the corner a little voice popped into my head and told me to invite Diego on the podcast. After a bit of persuasion, he was down for the recording and even offered me a piece of cardboard to sit on.

I sat down.

In this episode Diego and I talk about evil books, opioids, crack, heroin, coffee, and the misconceptions of being homeless.

About halfway through the conversation he started smoking Spice or K2 or Synthetic Weed.

Last week I spent about a week in Memphis, Tennessee capturing Sun Studios, Graceland, Stax and of course the legendary Beale Street.

On the last day of the assignment, we wrapped shooting at around 1am and I had the opportunity kick with it Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell in a parking outside of a spot called Beauty Shop.

It’s crazy because about an hour before meeting Boo, I was talking to my friend Jay about the podcast and he immediately started talking about how I should get Boo on show. He said he’d set it up and in my mind, I thought this would take month to make happen. Meaning I’d catch Boo when I was back in the city because I had to fly out in on the morning.

Shortly after that conversation, guess who walks through the door? Yup you guessed it, Boo.

I told the story to Boo and he said, “We call that Memphis serendipity”.

In this episode we talk about the early days of Royal Studios, wearing the hat of a producer, the false feel, putting love in the cooking, Uptown Funk, and much more.

I’m outta here, enjoy the talk.

Quick Summary: Today we talk with Alexander Sumner about the Difference between Style and Fashion, The Grateful Dead, Vintage Shops as well as the Four Components of a Well Made Suit.

--

If you know me, you know I’m not the most stylish person in the world. I mean that in the sense of being suited up to the nines. I think my style is more sporty or efficient… if you will. Or better yet, ninja like or unassuming. When I’m out capturing the places I visit, I don’t really want to be seen. I don’t want any kind of attention from anyone, I just want to get my shots and get the hell out of there… A lot of what you’ll see me in is dark muted shirts, dark jeans, some Air Max 1s or some all black chucks.

That being said, if there ever comes a time that its necessary for me to get dressed up, its not a foreign concept because of today’s guest, Alexander Sumner.

I met Alex a few years ago when this little voice in my head was going on and on about getting a real suit. So I started cruising the net and social media for men’s style. Visiting tumbler as well as sites like JJJJound and Instagram hashtags like #MensStyle. One day I came across this picture of a red button hole on a suit jacket. For some odd reason I thought it the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. It was nice touch that you’re not going to find on the $100 dollar suits I was used to back then. I’m telling y’all the truth, so judge me all you want about rocking a baggy $100 suit, but it was more of check box than anything else.

Anyway, I commented on how much I liked the detail and I would like to see it in person. Alex’s response was pretty much come on by the studio. So I did and the rest is what the young people are calling, uhh history.

I met Alex in SoHo and we talked about the difference between style and fashion, The Grateful Dead, vintage shops as well as the four components of a well made suit and much much more.

Toward the end of the conversation Alex turned the tables and inquired about New York Said: Volume Three. I ranted a bit about it and if your were curious to know what’s up with the new book, that info is there.

I’m outta here, enjoy the talk.

7 Wonders of Style Questions

1. In your wardrobe, what's your favorite piece of clothing, favorite shoe and favorite accessory?

2. Who, both inside & outside of your circle, had the greatest influence on your style?

3. Which musical group (or solo artist) most defines your sense of style?

4. Which would be your decade of choice to spend your prime in, style-wise?

5. As for creative inspiration; when was a time when you spotted someone or something and said, "I am going to incorporate that myself (and did) and when was a time when you spotted someone and said, “I’ll never be caught dead doing that," and you ended up doing so?

6. How have you seen style expressed in ways that have nothing to do with what a person wears?

7. What do you feel is the difference between style and fashion?

This episode is very special to me. It’s not often I get to converse with a innovator, a pioneer or a living legend in anything let alone graffiti culture. Today’s guest on the show is TAKI 183.

Before recording a single episode of this podcast I made list of people I would love to have on the show. I threw Taki’s name on there under the dream big column. I wrote it not ever thinking it was a real possibility but here we are lol. That write it down and manifest it stuff I’ve always heard about does have a lot of merit to it, so I’m learning.

TAKI 183 was gracious enough to give me a few hours of his time to talk in-depth about his creative journey at the Auto Body Shop he owns out Yonkers. That being said, it was toward the end of the work day so we had to stop and start depending on if someone in the garage or a client needed to pull him away for a second.

I put a sound effect in between clips to give you an idea of when I had to stop the tape.

This episode was recorded in the waiting area of the garage… So just like when I’m deep in the city, it has it’s own sounds; like refrigerator humming, beeps, doors slamming, car lifts, wheels getting changed, sirens and of course, a healthy amount of welcomed disturbances from folks in the neighborhood.

I could totally edit this stuff out but to me, its all apart of the New York Said audio experience.

Enough with the intro, please enjoy.

Today’s guest on the show is DJ Neil Armstrong. I’ve been listening to Neil’s mixes for well over 10 years now and I can honestly say I was pretty hype when he accepted my invite to appear on the show.

In this episode we have a super in-depth conversation about paying dues, how to sustain longevity in the entertainment business, his dog Poh, universal languages, his various experiences as a tour DJ for Jay Z, Neil’s Dinner & A Mixtape series plus much much more.

Just a heads up, we recorded this in a pretty quiet room. And a bunch of little kids showed up with their moms and all of a sudden it got live. It got loud, but Neil and I never stopped. We were knee deep into the conversation and at that point it didn’t make sense to move.

You can still hear us really clearly but the party in the background does get a bit distracting at times, I apologize in advance.

Today’s guest on the show is Drummer, Showtime Hood. As I was transferring to the F train at West 4th I heard the familiar sound of Showtime's drums. I stopped, listened and invited him to the show. He was happy to play a set but when I asked for an interview, Showtime thought it would be best to let his music do the talking.

Last week I found myself exploring several districts in Paris looking for street art and good eats. As I challenge to get a different flavor of the city I decided to skip the cabs and walk or take the metro to everywhere I wanted to go. In doing that I covered a lot of ground fairly quick.

One day as I was transferring from train to train and I walked by Marvin Parks in one of the tunnels. He was holding what looked like a record cover of himself and I just walked over to ask if he was a singer and he said  yes. I asked if he’d be down to share his story for podcast and he said yes.

So that being said, Marvin and I are standing in the middle of a busy passageway in the metro or the subway during rush hour. It’s pretty noisy down there but we got it done.

In this episode we talk about why Marvin moved to Paris, the key to surviving in the city, busking in the metro, Natalie Cole, reaching people with what you have and much much more.

Please enjoy.

Today’s episode a little different. This week I was in London walking their alleyways looking for street art and good eats. At some point I found myself doing the super touristy stuff, like checking out Big Ben and walking the busy South Bank Riverside Walkway.

On my my way to London Bridge I stumbled up gallery@oxo and was fascinated, better yet moved by Solo exhibition by artist Luke Norton, it was called ‘I haven’t been feeling myself lately’

I was so moved by the work that I inquired about the artist. Turns out Luke was in the spot and after a 5 minute conversation, I invited him to be on the show.  He was up for it and here we are.

In this episode we talking about growing up in South London, his current exhibition, words, ideas, phrases and much much more.

Please enjoy.

This is episode is a little different. A few weeks ago I was asked by my good friends Natacha and Gary to do an engagement photography shoot. Thats not really my thing but I told them I’d be up to have a Sunday fun day in Brooklyn and I’d bring my camera to capture the fun.

So on the first day of 2017, we all met in DUMBO and I captured their day.

Now, a few years ago I had this grand idea to interview a newly wed couple and asked them how they met, their first date, blah blah blah… For some odd reason that idea never happened.

On the morning of my shoot with Natacha and Gary this little voice was like “Bring the mic, do that idea thing with the couples and stuff” and so I did.

After the shoot I asked if they’d be down to help make my idea tangible and of course they were. I really do have great and supportive friends.

They had a car, So I told Gary to take a walk and I interviewed Natacha in the back seat of their VW Jetta. And then Gary came back, then I asked Natacha to kick rocks and got Gary’s side of the story.

I really just wanted to do this interview in private and give it to them. I had no intention of making these conversations public let alone a podcast episode but as I listened to their stories, I felt compelled to share them with you.

I got their permission aaaaaaaaand here we are.

Please, enjoy.

Happy New Year good people, welcome to the New York Said podcast. It’s a very rainy Tuesday in the Lower East Side but I’m feeling it. I love the sunshine because I appreciate the rain.

This episode is a little different. A few days ago I invited Juan back on the show to talk about his favorite podcast, music and books but we ended up talking about that and everything under the sun.

What you’re about to hear is take two. In the first take we started off great and then somehow we ended up in the super dark political place. It didn’t even make sense to publish it, I just made a new clip as we were talking and started from there.

Please enjoy.
